GSI PROJECTS
Lone Kauri Karekare
Overview:
Following Cyclone Gabrielle, GSI was contracted by Fulton Hogan for specialised slip repair work on Lone Kauri and Karekare Roads in West Auckland. The project involved stabilising eight separate worksites; five on Karekare Road and three on Lone Kauri Road, to make the roads safe for residents and commuters.
GSI’s initial engagement included using a specialist rock scaling team of Industrial Rope Access technicians to remove loose rocks, debris, and overhanging trees that posed an immediate danger.

Design.
Working with Andy O’Sullivan engineers, GSI delivered designed solutions for all eight sites. These solutions involved the installation of spider anchors, rock bolts, and flexible mesh.
Build.
To strengthen and repair the sites, prevent erosion and restore lane widths, GSI crews installed 2,647 lineal meters of soil nails, applied 881 square meters of shotcrete facing and 372 square metres of flexible mesh facing. The project also included drainage upgrades and the installation of guardrails and handrails, with GSI collaborating with Fulton Hogan’s Civils team and Streetworx.
Deliver.
Our early engagement scaling work cleared the way for the permanent geohazard solutions that followed. Our approach to this project for Fulton Hogan and Auckland Transport delivered a streamlined cost-effective solution for the repairs, further cementing our relationship with Fulton Hogan and AT as the go-to for design and build geohazard solutions.
